TLRC and CMRI Property Holdings
Historical Overview
During its peak in the early 1980s, the TLRC operated an extensive network of properties throughout the Pacific Northwest, primarily concentrated in northern Idaho and eastern Washington. Legal documentation from the 1980s indicated that the organization owned approximately 18 properties valued at $8 million, which would represent significantly higher values when adjusted for inflation.
The 1984 organizational split resulted in extended legal disputes over property ownership and control. The majority faction that remained at Mount Saint Michael ultimately retained control of most real estate assets, while the Schuckardt faction received limited property settlements.
Research Note: Property information reflects historical documentation from the 1970s-1980s. Current ownership status, valuations, and operational use may differ significantly from historical records.
North Idaho Properties
Primary Facilities
- City of Mary, Rathdrum: 100-acre property at the end of Church Road, featuring elementary school facilities. Served as the organization's primary center during the 1970s before the Mount Saint Michael acquisition. Currently maintains CMRI chapel operations under Fr. Benedict.
- Coeur d'Alene Convent: Three-story facility located at the corner of Lincoln Way and W Mill Avenue. A CMRI-affiliated priest continues to operate from a residence at 517 W Mill Avenue.
- Christ the King Priory: Monastery property at 314 E Garden Avenue in Coeur d'Alene. Historical records suggest this property was divested during the 1980s.
- St. Joseph's Chapel: Fourth Street location in Coeur d'Alene, housed in a converted commercial building. Continued in use following the Mount Saint Michael acquisition and was documented as organizational property through the mid-1980s.
Educational Facilities
- Villa Maria Boarding School: Originally located at Indiana and Second Street, later relocated to Wallace Avenue in Coeur d'Alene. Operated as both residential facility and Immaculate Convent School for female students. Managed by lay administrators Miss Shroyer and Miss Hogenkamp.
- Espiritu Youth Camp: Annual summer program operated at Twin Lakes, Idaho. Documentation unclear whether the organization owned property at this location or utilized temporary facilities.
Eastern Washington Properties
Mount Saint Michael Complex
- Main Seminary and Chapel: 735-acre property purchased December 30, 1977, for $1.5 million from the Society of Jesus. Became organizational headquarters and primary residence for male religious community. Currently operated by CMRI under Fr. Casimir Puskorius.
- Spokane Residence: Bishop's residence at 2314 E South Altamont Boulevard in Spokane. Served as Schuckardt's primary residence during the early 1980s, separate from the Mount Saint Michael community. Property was divested following the 1984 organizational restructuring.
- Colbert Facility: Convent and girls' high school located approximately 15 miles north of Spokane in Colbert, Washington.
International Properties
Canadian Operations
- Cabrini Mission: 165-acre property in northern Canada established during the late 1970s. According to Magnus Lundberg's research, Schuckardt directed nuns to develop this remote location as preparation for what he termed the "Great Persecution." The facility was stocked with provisions and equipment as part of organizational preparedness planning.
Property Acquisition and Management
Financing and Ownership Structure
Property acquisitions were facilitated through donations from members who relocated to join the organization. Many individuals sold personal property and businesses to contribute to organizational real estate purchases. The Mount Saint Michael acquisition was conducted through Pillar Investment Company, with young member Patrick Urann obtaining real estate licensing to facilitate the transaction.
Planned Development Projects
The organization developed plans for extensive residential development around Mount Saint Michael, including St. Joseph's Village with projected construction of over 150 homes. Environmental regulations and local zoning restrictions significantly limited these development plans, though some members did purchase individual lots.
Legal Disputes and Asset Division
1984 Split Litigation
Following Schuckardt's departure, extensive legal proceedings ensued regarding property ownership and asset distribution. Key litigation included:
- Spokane Superior Court Case 84-2-01445-2: Fr. Chicoine sued Schuckardt for organizational property, resulting in $250,000 judgment
- Utah Court proceedings documenting attempts by both factions to claim organizational assets
- Multi-state litigation involving property claims in Arizona, California, Idaho, and Washington
Asset Resolution
The majority faction that remained at Mount Saint Michael retained control of most organizational real estate, including the primary facilities in Idaho and Washington. The Schuckardt faction received limited monetary settlements but lost claims to major property holdings.
Contemporary Status
Current CMRI operations continue at several historical TLRC locations, including Mount Saint Michael and the City of Mary. Some properties documented in historical sources have been divested, while others may have changed operational status or ownership structure.
Independent traditionalist operations by former CMRI clergy utilize some properties in the Pacific Northwest region, though these are organizationally separate from current CMRI institutional structures.
Comprehensive updating of property ownership and operational status would require current real estate records research and direct organizational confirmation, as historical documentation may not reflect contemporary circumstances.
